Keeping a driving lesson progress record

Use your driving lesson progress record to work out what to practise next. Write down the topic and the instructor’s feedback, add the learner’s reflection and agree a goal for the next lesson. A score on its own won’t tell you all of that.

From CoreDrive. The examples are fictional. Use this guide alongside qualified instruction and current official guidance.

What to write down

  • Which topic did the lesson cover?
  • What did the instructor observe?
  • What is clearer now, and what still feels difficult?
  • What should you revisit or prepare before the next lesson?

An example record

This example isn’t a real customer result. Your instructor should choose feedback and practice goals that fit your learning. Record what was observed; don’t invent a success percentage.

Fictional example: the lesson focused on understanding a road situation. The learner explained the layout clearly but needed prompting about one part. Their reflection was, “The picture helped me understand the layout; I need to ask about the part I missed.” For the next lesson, they’ll review that question with the instructor and agree suitable practice.

Revisit the goal

Look at the previous goal when the next lesson starts. Discuss what is clearer, where you still need help and whether to change the goal. Progress won’t always move at the same pace, so keep the record up to date with what’s happening.

When you’re thinking about the driving test

Finishing a topic list or getting a high progress score doesn’t guarantee that you’re ready for the test. Talk to your instructor about whether you can drive safely and consistently, and read the official Ready to Pass guidance. Be open about anything you still need help with so you can plan further learning.

Be careful with personal information

Only include information that helps with learning. Keep passwords, unnecessary medical details and other people’s confidential information out of the notes. Follow the service’s rules about access and how long records are kept when deciding what to record or share.

Where Progress & Reflections fits

The main CoreDrive preview includes skills records, a learning roadmap and reflections. We’re planning separate Progress & Reflections apps for instructors and learners. Private learner entries remain separate from instructor records. Who can access records and how information moves through the service still need testing. Shared sign-in does not combine access to private records or paid entitlements.
