Preparing for a practical mock driving test
A practical mock driving test gives you and your instructor a chance to discuss your driving and what needs more work. It’s different from a theory-test quiz. One mock result can’t guarantee what will happen on test day.

Talk to your instructor first
Ask your instructor if a mock test is right for your stage of learning. Talk about what you can do consistently and where you still need help, then agree what you want to learn from the assessment.
Your instructor should choose the assessment and make the safety arrangements using current guidance. This guide covers preparation; it doesn’t give you a test route or a device-marking method, and it doesn’t replace qualified instruction.
Before the assessment
- Discuss whether you’re ready and what the assessment is for.
- Ask what your instructor will assess and how you’ll get feedback.
- Ask about anything you’re unsure of before you start.
- Allow time afterwards to discuss the drive and plan your next lesson.
Discuss what happened on the drive
Ask your instructor to explain a specific observation from the drive. Discuss why it mattered and what you should practise next. If you don’t understand a fault label, ask for an example so you know what to work on.
Example debrief: the learner needed help with a particular skill. The instructor explains what they observed and why it mattered. They agree on appropriate supervised practice and a later lesson where they’ll revisit the skill.
Read the official guidance
DVSA’s mock-test guidance for England, Scotland and Wales restricts tablet marking during mock tests and driving lessons. A parked demonstration doesn’t override that restriction. Northern Ireland has separate arrangements.
Keep the feedback with the record
