Using visual aids in driving lessons
A simple picture can help when a driving explanation is hard to follow. Start with one point the learner is finding difficult, so you have something to look at together and the briefing doesn’t get lost in an overcrowded diagram.
From CoreDrive. The examples are fictional. Use this guide alongside qualified instruction and current official guidance.
Decide what you want to explain
Before you draw, decide what you want the learner to understand. They might need help making sense of a layout, identifying a feature or describing a situation. Then choose a picture that helps with that question.
Explain one part of a road layout
Choose a relevant layout for the briefing and point out the feature you’re discussing. Add a clear label or mark. Ask the learner what they see before adding more detail; tracing every possible movement can make the picture harder to follow.
Example briefing: ask which feature of the layout is unclear. Show a simple labelled picture with that feature marked, then ask the learner to explain it in their own words. The instructor decides what instruction or practice should follow.
When a sketch is clearer than a map
If the map has too much detail, try a sketch. Label the objects you’re discussing and use each mark consistently. Explain that the sketch is an illustration: the actual signs, road markings and conditions still apply.
Check understanding
- Ask the learner to explain the picture in their own words.
- Ask what still isn’t clear.
- Change the illustration if it’s causing confusion.
- Agree an appropriate learning step after the explanation.
Use images responsibly
Check when the map imagery was produced, how it must be credited and what use the provider allows. A diagram can leave out important details, and an older image may show a layout that has since changed. Use current official information and the instructor’s judgement. One picture won’t cover every road situation.
Where Street Canvas fits
We’re developing Street Canvas for explanations using road maps, drawings and vehicle positions. The preview includes drawing tools and options for saving diagrams. We’ll confirm map access, permissions, supported devices and limits before launch. Navigation and offline use across all functions haven’t been promised.
